The most common motorcycle accidents causing injury and death

There's a tradeoff for the free-feeling, exhilarating sensations that come with motorcycle riding. The practice is extremely dangerous. But, learning about which hazards riders face most often can help you know what to expect while on the road.

These are the most common causes of motorcycle accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Lefthand-turn accidents

It's difficult for automobile drivers to notice motorcycles on the road and to judge their oncoming speed correctly. So, when an automobile must yield to oncoming traffic before making a lefthand turn, they may turn in front of or into an oncoming motorcycle accidentally.

To avoid these accidents, you may want to slow down as you approach intersections. Also, make sure you have enough room to stop, slow down or get out of the way in case of a negligent driver.

Lane-change accidents

Lane-change accidents typically happen when motorcycles are in a driver's blind spot. Your lane position can help you to be seen. You can also wear bright clothing and keep your headlines on at all times of the day.

Rear-end collisions

Being rear-ended while riding a motorcycle can be deadly. The best way to avoid this type of accident is to come to a slow stop. Use engine braking by shifting down into lower gears.

If you are faced with a circumstance in which you need to apply the brakes suddenly, try to skid over onto the shoulder if available.

Hitting an opened car door

This type of accident has been so common that the area near parked cars has become known to motorcyclists as "the death zone." Riders can avoid these types of accidents by riding the lefthand lane position and staying vigilient.

Gravel and slippery conditions

Rain, snow, sleet and gravel can make riding a motorcycle extremely dangerous. One way to combat those conditions is to make sure you have hard gripping tires. Ride slow and remember to increase the following distance between you and other drivers.

Alcohol

The number one cause of fatal motorcycle accidents is operating the vehilce while intoxicated. Never drink and drive no matter what motor vehicle you are operating.

Get help after an accident

If you are involved in a motorcycle collision due to the action of a negligent driver, seek medical attention immediately and make sure the police are involved to document the accident. Next, contact an experienced personal injury attorney to get help covering the costs of the injuries you received.
