What can accident victims recover in a lawsuit?

With the Memorial Day holiday weekend coming, it is expected that traffic around Tallahassee will be higher than usual. In fact, AAA expects a near record volume of travelers despite gas prices being the highest they’ve been in four years.

Because of the higher number of drivers on the road, and the increased likelihood of drunk driving and distracted driving, Memorial Day weekend also has the dubious distinction for being one of the most dangerous holidays of the year. If you have the misfortune of being in an accident, it is helpful to know the extent of monetary damages can be recovered.

This post will focus on a few.

Medical expenses – The person found legally responsible for causing accident could also be held responsible for paying expenses surrounding medical treatment. This reasoning applies whether you just suffer minor cuts and bruises or injuries requiring an extended hospital stay and long-term rehabilitation.

Pain and suffering – Similarly, injury victims can suffer mental and physical distress well after a crash. It is not uncommon for someone to deal with chronic pain after an accident or develop PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) after a particularly violent crash.

Lost wages – Those who are severely injured may not be able to work as they recover. Because of this, compensation for lost wages may be available.

Rehabilitation costs – As we alluded to earlier, a severely injured accident victim may need extensive physical therapy to regain strength or range of motion.

If you have additional questions about compensation after an accident, an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you.
