Safety tips that old and new riders should follow

With Memorial Day weekend coming, we should not forget that May is motorcycle safety month. Unlike other regions of the country, Floridians can ride motorcycles nearly all year long, so drivers don’t have to get used to seeing motorcyclists. However, the dangers posed to those who drive cars are even more treacherous for motorcycle riders. After all, bikers are not protected aluminum frames like motorists.

As we head towards the unofficial start of summer there are several tips that old and new motorcycle riders alike should follow. This post will highlight them.

Wear a good helmet – Most people wear helmets that are unique and reflect their personality. However, not every helmet is certified under federal safety guidelines. When you are shopping for helmets, make sure they are properly labeled and indicate that they are certified.

Know your bike – Another way that motorcyclists can be vulnerable is if they don’t know how powerful their bike can be. Because of this, going on a test ride (much like taking a test drive in a car) is important. There is no sense in purchasing a motorcycle that is too powerful for you simply because you think it is cool.

Don’t drink and ride – Just like a person driving a car should not get behind the wheel after having a few drinks, a person riding a motorcycle should not get on their bike while intoxicated. After all, alcohol can affect one’s judgment as well as the rider’s sense of balance.

We hope our readers have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend. If you have questions about your rights and options after a motorcycle accident, an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you.
