Getting into a car accident will be one of the most harrowing and life-changing moments for anyone. The wreck could forever change your body (giving you whiplash or neck injuries that never fully heal, for example) or it could forever change your mind (making you afraid of driving on a particular street or in general). But even if the particular car accident that you are involved in isn’t serious, it will still be scary and it will still bring out emotions in you that you least expect.
Being mentally prepared for the aftermath of a motor vehicle collision is a very important skill that most people don’t possess — and that’s understandable. It is so stressful that many people will default to their base instincts: anger and aggression.
However, there is a better way to approach your post-collision world. If you go into it with a clear head and a calm demeanor, it will help you greatly in dealing with the other drivers and people involved. Being angry and aggressive is only going to make matters worse, and could trigger the anger and aggression of others.
You will need to interact with the other people involved in the crash, and you should call emergency responders if medical assistance is needed. Be prepared to follow any instructions the phone operator gives you in case emergency help is needed for the victim.
If the accident doesn’t come to that, then exchanging information with the participants of the crash is necessary. You should also photograph your car, their vehicle, any other vehicles involved, and the crash scene in general (including pictures of the intersection or signage).
