Prepare yourself to minimize injury when falling down

Sometimes when you fall down, you might not be able to get up, especially when a serious injury such as a head injury or broken hip occurs.

Not all falls can be avoided, but some are preventable and injuries may be minimized by doing something as simple as wearing the right clothing or fall-proofing your home.

Each year more than 800,000 people are hospitalized in the United States due to falls related to slipping on ice, water or food, and also an uneven rug inside the home, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fall-proof your home

We’ve assembled a list of tips on how to prepare and avoid a fall:

  • Don’t walk while using the phone and reading.
  • Always use handrails when walking on stairs.
  • Consider adding safety bars in the shower.
  • Be careful of loose rugs, and secure or remove them.
  • Outside the home, use salt to clear ice on sidewalks and steps.

Falling properly, wearing right gear

One can be prepared as much as possible, but sometimes these tips may not prevent a fall. In that case, we have assembled another list on how to fall properly and how to prepare your body.

  • Tuck and roll: By tucking your body into a ball, you may prevent bone breaks. Such a defensive move may minimize injuries to your head, back and wrists. Typically, people instinctively attempt to break a fall with their hands. In the split seconds of a fall, try to avoid that and pull your arms toward your body.
  • Protect your head by wearing a helmet: Head injuries can be severe and debilitating, so you must protect your head when bicycling, skiing or skateboarding. If you’re falling backward, tuck your chin into your chest to prevent your head from slamming back and hitting the ground.
  • Wear the right clothing: When it’s cold outside, dress in layers. Added padding such as sweaters and coats can soften a fall. In addition, always wear good shoes with solid soles and treads.
  • Strengthen your body and core: Perform regular, simple workouts such as sit-ups and crunches. This will help you improve balance. Also, eat a balanced diet to support your bones and muscles.

Sometimes falls cannot be prevented, so stay safe and stay prepared.
