Wrong-way driver on I-75 is behind a six-car crash

Just before 3 am on Sunday, February 16, 2019, a driver in a 2020 Ford Mustang was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75 when she collided head-on with another vehicle, causing a six-car crash. This occurred between Corkscrew Road and Alico Road. Florida Highway Patrol had to close the northbound lanes overnight. The accident is still under investigation, though alcohol seems to be a likely factor in it.

The driver who initiated the crash has been identified as the 25-year-old captain of the “Everbabes,” the official dance team for the Florida Everblades ECHL hockey team. Her information on the Everblades website has been removed, it appears, out of respect for her privacy.

She has been listed as being in critical condition. The driver of the car that was hit head-on was in critical condition at first but is now considered in “good condition” and has been released from the hospital. Eight others were involved in the crash, their age ranging from 16 to 57, but they were able to walk away from the crash without injury.

Once the police discover how the wrong-way driver was at fault, it can pave the way for a personal injury claim on the part of the other driver. Florida is a no-fault state, so those who incur minor injuries after car accidents may recover all they are entitled to in damages with their own insurance company. It is only in cases of serious injuries or disabilities that a third-party insurance claim can be pursued.

Those who believe they have grounds for such a claim may want to consult an attorney. Having legal representation may help make the negotiation process smoother, assuming that the other side is willing to settle out of court. As a last resort, an attorney may prepare for litigation.
