Red turn signal lights are not as safe

According to recent statistics, Florida’s drivers would be much better protected behind the wheel if all automakers made one simple and inexpensive change. All they need to do is replace the red turn signal lights with orange or amber lights. This alone would cut the risk of an accident by more than 5%.

Studies have shown that cars with red turn signals are 22% more likely to be rear-ended when they are changing lanes or executing a turn. This is compared to cars with amber turn signals. One would think that upgrading a car to ensure safety would cost a fortune. After all, driver safety systems can cost thousands of dollars. However, amber turn signal lights cost only a few dollars more than red ones.

Despite the fact that amber lights are mandatory in Europe, there is no such rule in the U.S. To safety advocates, this is a very simple regulatory change that would be very easy to implement. However, the federal government has chosen not to go this far with regulations. The NHTSA is only thinking about adding amber lights to the list of features needed to obtain a five-star safety rating.

Drivers and their passengers who have been hurt in a car crash may be able to receive financial compensation if someone else was at fault. They should get in touch with a personal injury lawyer to learn more about the claims process. An attorney could assist a client as they deal with the insurance company and seek a settlement that could cover damages.
