Motorcycle safety awareness in Florida pushed by nonprofit

When it comes to some motorcyclists in Florida, many are all about life on two wheels. Thus, many residents and visitors in the state take to the road to specifically enjoy a ride on their bike. While these are enjoyable and convenient vehicles to get around, they also present many risks. Due to their small size, motorists may overlook their presence. This could result in a collision and the motorcyclist suffering serious or even fatal injuries.

Motorcycle safety

Since the start of 2021, there have been over 2,000 motorcycle accidents in the state of Florida. These collisions resulted in 144 fatalities. This sparked a local nonprofit to bring awareness to motorcycle safety; specifically, highlighting the importance of recognizing those traveling around one’s vehicle while driving.

Even when efforts are made to address and reduce certain types of accidents, they are never completely preventable. Distracted driving, drunk driving and negligent or reckless driving exist in society, causing accidents on the roadways. Some motorists, such as motorcyclists, are especially at risk due to the small size of the vehicle and the lack of safety features that passenger vehicles have. Thus, these are more likely to result in serious injuries, damages and even fatalities.

Dangers for motorcyclists

Driving on two wheels means that a motorcycle is smaller than other vehicles traveling on the roadways. While there are benefits to this, it also means that they are more difficult to spot, especially when a motorcyclist is traveling right next to a passenger vehicle or is approaching them near an intersection.

Another factor that places motorcyclists at a greater risk is the fact that they do not enjoy the same safety features as a passenger vehicle. They do not have restraints, a hard exterior shell or air bags. Therefore, a collision is more likely to result in the rider being thrown from the bike, landing on the ground or another object. This in turn causes a greater chance for severe and fatal injuries following a motorcycle accident.

It is important that victims as well as the loved ones of deceased victims take the time to understand their rights when it comes to filing a civil action. A personal injury claim or wrongful death suit could help address these losses and damages while also holding a negligent motorist accountable.
